Dead Zone

Am I the only one who's kinda creeped out by the DirecTV ad featuring Chris Farley? After seeing it 2 or 3 times I actually had to ask Mrs. F, "Chris Farley's dead, right?" In the ensuing discussion, she pointed out that perhaps the Farley estate/family could use the cash... I suppose that's possible, but the whole thing seems offputting to me. And since I've never been a fan of David Spade, profiting off the image of your dead friend really doesn't help his case with me.

Full Disclosure: I actually never liked either Spade OR Farley and thought both of them were one-trick ponies on SNL and beyond. So, naturally I never saw Tommy Boy, so there's certainly the chance that there's something to the ad I'm not appreciating...but somehow I doubt it.

Also, this isn't DirecTV's first trip to the graveyard for their spokespeople...

There are occasions where all my brain can handle is low-brow fart humor comedies. Like when I am at home with the flu. Tommy Boy fulfills that entertainment need for me, because I don't have to pay much attention, and I can smirk without laughing. That scene makes me giggle, and has been played-out amongst friends almost as much as when it was cool to say "I'm Rick James, Bitches...SLAP."

That said, here's my grump: David Spade isn't well-known or funny enough to warrant his own commercial. Ever since his best buddy Farley died, he hasn't been seen in much at all. He needed Chris, and so he agreed to go to the well on this one. Cheap. Desperate? Mostly...meh.

No surprise you're a fan...(see the avatar). They've each had good moments in their careers—even Spade. My gripe about them in SNL days is probably better directed at the weak writing of the time.

I have it on very good authority that Tommy Boy is a funny flick.
