The platform is off to the side as I understand it, not atop the wellhead. If that thing fell straight down on top of it, we'd probably never get it shut off.
Well the second story in my next post explains why they can't just drop rocks all over it or something. They need to actually do a proper repair to that wellhead. If the valve that is currently restricting the oil to 5,000 (or whatever) barrels a day fails further or blows out, that thing could be gushing 150,000 barrels until the reserve is exhausted.

You could conceivably build a concrete dome big enough to cover the well, but the platform? Dude, do you know how big oil drilling platforms are?
