Miscellany

TIME Magazine Unveils Redesign I'd seen the "Crying Reagan" cover on a few lefty blogs (and Slate?) as a political topic. I thought the layout was different, but didn't think much of it. Kottke directed me to Pentagram (who did the deed), which shows off the changes inside. Overall, a nice job. Definite improvement. You guys might not care, but it's what I do for a living, so I feel like weighing in.

U of Nebraska Tells RIAA to Pound Sand Or Husk Corn. Or Something. Good for them
***UPDATE: UNL actually DID attempt to comply with RIAA [link], but they were unable to because their IT dept changes IP addresses too frequently they were unable to. RIAA got on their ass about it, and UNL told them they would have to pay for the privelege of tracking downloaders. Hardly worthy of commendation. Though, at least they are sticking RIAA with the bill.

My regard for Time has been so low for, oh, about 25, 28 years now that the cosmetics never get a chance to impress me one way or the other.

Sorry to sound so negative, but they've earned it — corporate media at its worst. The magazine's holding off for a whole year a story that could've cut Bush's presidential career short was the capper. And then they gave the excuse they didn't report the story in October '04 because it might've affected the election!

Sorry, but you got me started.

No argument here.

This may actually be slightly off-topic, but what I find interesting here is the rehabilitation/fictionalization of the Reagan Legacy: as the TRUE small government warrior, who stood for TRUE conservative values, blah, blah, blah.

But looking at what Reagan did, rather than what he said, we find a big spender, who increased the size & scope of the federal government at many points.

And for all his talk of pro-life/prayer in school, he didn't actually DO very much in that direction (see: Sandra Day O'Conner).

I hated Reagan and still do, so I'm hardly defending him.. But your rank-and-file GOPer is fooling himself into thinking Reagan was some sort of latter-day Goldwater during his days in the White House.

Reagan was practically as big a fraud as the shithead representing the GOP in the White House now. Bigger gov't, raised taxes, no social conservative "advances". All Reagan did was really kick off the rape and pillage of the country at the behest of corporate America.

None of his legacy actually lives up to the hype or even holds up i\under scrutiny.

But he's their hero all the same...

I will actually give Reagan credit for raising taxes after cutting them too much. Bush is too much of a pussy to do that.
