Get On It!

Are you voting?

Mrs. Furious is getting pummeled by the worst most inexplicable blog I think I've ever seen. And being in the same bracket as dooce.com and her HUGE readership is certainly a tough draw, but Mrs. F kicks her ass in quality and quantity—Armstrong's just mailing it in these days...

Makes me wish I'd learned some web design, and gave Mrs. F template worthy of her content.

Pick me up. Vote every day from home and work. My audience of six can close that gap!

UPDATE: I'm NOT hatin' on dooce—I like Heather (and Jon) quite a bit—but that blog should be in one of the large-size categories. Honestly, except for a vastly superior site design and earning potential, dooce has got nothing on Mrs F.

UPDATE 2: Removed a link and toned down the rhetoric. Just because I'm not "getting it" doesn't negate somebody else's hard work blogging, or their readers.

My Better Half...

...literally.

The 2008 Weblog Awards

Mrs. F has moved up in the world from a "Best New Blog" finalist to "Best Diarist" finalist in this year's Weblog Awards.

As they say in Chicago, "Vote early and vote often."

UPDATE: Plus, if you read Mrs F's blog it's like a "Furious: Behind the Music" episode...all kinds of crazy shit I never reveal goes on over there daily. On second thought...

My Big Three Bailout Plan

Yeah, that's right. I'm laying out my plan to save the industry, but first, I've got some shit to get off my chest...

I've been mulling over a massive critique of the American auto companies for a while now...Ever since I went to the (Detroit) North American International Auto Show a couple years ago and watched as GM countered the onslaught of the Prius, hybrid Hondas and other kick-ass imports with the big unveiling of their updated GMT900 line of full-size trucks and SUVs (Silverados, Tahoe, Yukons, Suburban, etc.)

One year later, Dodge brought in a herd of cattle for their new full-size Ram pickup to "drive" through downtown Detroit. Putting aside the sheer stupidity of that stunt and lack of relevance of using the truck for actual labor, they were even further behind than GM.

Now I'm not saying all of those vehicles weren't a little long in the tooth, and didn't need a facelift—they did, and they are the best looking versions of those trucks yet—but GM (and last year, Chrysler) was betting EVERYTHING on these vehicles at a time when it was clear the Era of the Big SUV was winding down. They've made some admirable gains in fuel economy, introduced a hybrid Tahoe, but the fact remains they were behind the curve in a big way, and instead of investing in warm blood and fur, they poured hundreds of millions of dollars redesigning the dinosaur right before the Ice Age.

It appears they have learned that lesson now, when it is too late. GM has indefinitely suspended plans to redesign the line again, instead of the standard six-year lifespan. What brought them to that conclusion? Full-size SUV sales have plummeted 51% since they unveiled the 2007 models. The Trailblazer (mid-size SUV) sales fell 73%. And those numbers are from before gas prices spent the summer over $4.

One thing Detroit can clearly still do is rear-view mirrors.

Here's the thing: Two years ago, I knew those SUVs were going to be launched, and how fucking stupid a bet GM was making, but that's not what's most frustrating... It was going to the NAIAS this past January and seeing these cars:

What's wrong with those cars, Mr Furious?

Nothing. Nothing except the fact that in January of 2008 they were still fucking concept vehicles for GM! I'm pretty sure Toyota's been making money hand over fist in that niche with Scion since 2004.

All I could do is stare from offstage, snap my pics and wonder aloud, "Why the hell aren't cars like that in showrooms NOW?!?"

If I were on the Senate Banking Committee today, I'd ask Rick Wagoner why it wasn't some team's 24/7 job to get those two cars on the road by the end of the year. Seriously. And don't waste time blanding-down the design—those two cars are hot and would sell like crazy just as they are.

Which leads me to my first bailout requirement:

Fire everyone who looks at a concept car and says, "our focus group tells us that they won't like..." I bet there's a whole level of management jackasses in each division responsible for taking cool cars and turning them into Cobalts and G5s. History backs me up on this. The cars released in the last decade that made the smallest style jump from show floor to showroom were successful: The New Beetle, Mini Cooper, PT Cruiser, the current Prius. Next up? The Volt. They've already made the concept car look too much like a Stratus. Why is Detroit afraid to take a fucking chance? The Volt NEEDS TO look different. It's the first electric car. People who buy one don't want to be mistaken for Malibu drivers (and for the record, I think the Malibu is the best-looking Chevy sedan in forty years). Do you hear what I'm saying, GM? "Green" sells. Prius drivers aren't just saving gas, they're making a fucking statement driving around in that lozenge. All the hype around the Volt is going to deflate somewhat when that cool-ass concept everyone saw looks "normal."

Let me get to the real nuts and bolts stuff that needs to happen to save these companies. Trim the fat. And there is plenty of it. All of the Big Three have too much duplication across brands. Cut brands, and cut models:

GENERAL MOTORS

Buick—Gone. The loyal Buick customer base has to be pushing 70. Elderly people buying their last car ain't a plan for the future.

Cadillac—An upscale line is good. And I like the new "sharp edge" direction. Skews younger. Pick one full size sedan, I like the STS, so ditch the DTS. You can only keep the Escalade if every single one is Hybrid or DoD (Displacement on Demand—shuts off half the cylinders when not needed)

Chevy—Family cars, SUVs, pickups and the Corvette. That's it. Start making Hybrid Equinoxes. And goddammit, build a fucking station wagon again. No more Avalanche—stupidest idea ever. All full-size trucks and SUVs need Hybrid or DoD powertrains.

GMC—Gone. There is no need to duplicate with Chevy: Yukon=Tahoe. Stop building both. All commercial trucks are Chevys now. Why? Because the separate division has a whole layer of management that is redundant.

HUMMER—Gone. Just for symbolism's sake if nothing else, but that market is dead.

Pontiac—Because I like the Vibe, Solstice and G6 so much it's hard to let go. Pontiac can be the "sporty division" and those three and the G8 is their lineup. That's it. No SUVs or vans, and ditch the G5, it's ugly.

Saab—Sell it. Please. Let somebody in Sweden make cool, quirky cars again. GM trashed this once great brand the second they bought it, and I will go back to Detroit and kill someone if their mismanagement means Saab's demise.

Saturn
—Duplication is a problem here, but they have the best lineup in the company, run differently from factory to sales floor and as far as I know do well.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Ford—
Your website won't load, so you get nothing. Actually, here's what I want: The European Focus. Wagons and hatchbacks. Trust me.

Lincoln—
Again, and upscale brand is fine. Sedans only. No SUVs.

Mercury—A fetish for vertical grillwork is no reason to duplicate an entire line of automobiles. Good bye.

CHRYSLER

Chrysler—
Family sedans and minivans. No more Aspen. All trucks and SUVs are now Dodges or Jeeps. Limit duplication.

Dodge—Sporty cars and trucks only. All lame sedans (Avenger=Sebring) and vans are now Chryslers.

Jeep—Compass, Liberty or PAtriot: Pick one, lose the other two. Everything else is fine.

Note: In no way do I support a financial benefit for Cerberus, the holding company that owns Chrysler, until the company is back in the black and they earn a reward for their investment.

--

All companies need to start cracking on electric, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles like fucking yesterday. Engine technology improvements have gone too far over towards power instead of efficiency. There is really no need for any average family car to be packing over 200 horses. Get that shit turned around.

No companies can pay dividends, and stockholders are holding the bag—I don't care if they take a bath. Top level executives forgo salaries until the loans are paid back. Their stock options should be compensation and incentive enough. Mid-level management should have been thinned with consolidation of brands and models, all salaries and bonuses are frozen.

Union wages freeze. Contracts are not opened up, but concessions can and should be made. Negotiations to alter terms for legacy costs should ensue.

ALL THREE COMPANIES NEED TO ACTIVELY PUSH FOR UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE. When enacted, all employees top to bottom, plus retirees need to abandon company healthcare in favor of national plan. This single factor will relieve their biggest current and legacy financial burdens.

That's all I can think of now, and I'm tired. Get it done, you bastards.

Brine's Song

If for some reason you are still not sure how to prepare your turkey this Thanksgiving, let Mrs Furious show you how it's done.

Best. Turkey. Ever.

Seriously. Brining the bird is the way to go: tremendous flavor, golden brown skin, half the cooking time? And Mrs F's technique has plenty of little "extra somethings." In the brine? kosher salt, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, candied ginger and bayleaves… In the bird? Not stuffing—aromatics: quartered yellow onion, orange, lemon, rosemary, sage, parsley, celery tops, more ginger…

Still thinking about roasting a bird crammed with croutons?

The best part? When you reach into the fridge for a chunk of leftover turkey, no need to do the little "salt and pepper" dance. Totally seasoned and moist. Yum

Mr Furious Heartily Recommends...

The Raconteurs "Old Enough"

Entertaining enough as a music video, but I really think this song is the best single—by anyone I've heard—in years. At least back to My Doorbell. The best part? I love the organ. The keys are the unsung hero on this second Raconteurs album—promote that guy to full band member status already.

As if I hadn't made this clear by now—Buy. This. Album.

"The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane"
by Kate DeCamillo

Quite simply the finest children's book I've ever read. Period. Phenomenal story, breathtaking artwork, extravagant print-production. So good I would recommend this story to anyone, whether or not they have kids. Like so many other children's stories (The Velveteen Rabbit leaps to mind), this tale is centered around the "life" of a toy, but it is so much more. An adventure, or more accurately a mis-adventure, but mostly an emotional journey.

I read this to Kid after we gave it to her for Easter, and I could hardly put it down. There are moments in this story I thought were a bit too much for her five-year-old sensibilities, but they were easily "edited" in my recitation. I think this story really benefits from being read aloud to a child, but an older kid would love to read it to themselves as well.

Here is the NY Times Book Reviewbut don't read the review, they give FAR too much of the story away, but along the sidebar there is a link to read, or listen to the audiobook version of the first chapter.

UPDATE: A blogger's review that does a better job than I describing the wonder of this story. ALERT: Unlike the NYT review no details are revealed, but certain things are revealed here, so if you like to go into a story totally cold, stop reading now and just go get the book...

NOTE: I bumped this back to the top, because I didn't want another Hillary post above the fold for the next 18 hours...so sue me.

Still working on my big post I mentioned yesterday, but in the meantime, go read this post by Hilzoy.

Three albums curently making the rounds in my iPod and car stereo...

Brendan Benson
Alternative to Love

Benson came to my attention as the not-Jack White guy from the Raconteurs. This is one of his solo albums from the pre-Rac days, and it is great. At first it reminded me of the previously endorsed "Girlfriend" from Matthew Sweet mixed with a bit of Michael Penn. But the more I listen to it (which is often) the more it reminds me of old Squeeze. And that's a very good thing. You can hear two songs from Benson at his website here, but they are not from this album. Just go to iTunes and grab "Alternative to Love." If you like any of the artists I mentioned, you won't be disappointed.

Rodrigo y Gabriela
Rodrigo y Gabriela

I'm late to the party on this one, but I cannot say enough about how infectious this album is. I put this on in the living room, and no one in the house can stay still. Baby and Kid F start bopping around and the next thing you know we are all doing the flamenco. Literally. You may have heard of this Mexican guitar duo by way of Dublin as they had a radio hit last year and some notoriety for covering "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica on this album. Highly recommended for both aural pleasure and cardio benefits.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
Raising Sand

The most recent acquisition, it has gotten the fewest listens, but this sounds like a keeper. A haunting yet melodic collection of blues and folk standards with some Tom Waits thrown in, produced by T-Bone Burnett. Each vocalist trades solos and harmonize amazingly. As I type this I am cursing myself for not bringing the CD in to put on my work computer.

FLASHBACK BONUS: Not really "making the rounds" but just brought out for an encore...

Paul Simon—Graceland
Yeah, I know this is twenty years old, and probably seems like you heard it enough times for a lifetime, I recommend pulling it out and giving it a listen. I put it on the other day, and it was perfect Saturday afternoon music as we went about our business in the house. Every bit as good today as it was when I bought it as one of my very first CDs.

Debate Post-Mortem

Last night was the final debate between the Democratic candidates and it went just like the last few...Obama has closed the gap on what used to be a big advantage for Hillary—debate setting vs public speaking. He came off well, fought off some ridiculous gotcha questions from the excreable Tim Russert and looked pretty damn Presidential. Hillary also did a great job telling Russert to STFU when deserving, avoided saying "Day One™" and had some typically strong moments—she is good in this format—but she had some big missteps. She needed a game-changer and didn't get it.

We did a Debate Couch (live-commenting) at Toast's if you want to read our witty repartee, but the best thing I've read on last nights debate is here. Click, you'll be glad you did.

I mean it.

UPDATE: A good piece on Russert from last fall [link], and why he's a terrible choice for a debate moderator.

God knows I've got a backlog of Obama v. Clinton shit to dish, but I don't have time at the moment, and I think I need to mix things up a bit here anyway. Let's "put aside our differences" and "reach out and agree" about what I tell you kicks ass...

'INTO THE WILD' SOUNDTRACK
I gotta stick this in here as well. Very solid album from Eddie Vedder. There are a couple songs from this on the radio that are very good, "Guaranteed" and "Hard Sun," but this is a solid (if abbreviated) solo debut from Vedder start to finish. I haven't seen the film yet, but listening to this album makes me all the more anxious for the video release.

MATTHEW SWEET's "GIRLFRIEND"
Don't know why I picked this album out of hundreds the other day, but boy, what a fantastic flashback. Phenomenal album. Power pop/songwriting at its very best. Sweet put it all together for this breakout (relatively speaking) effort, and never quite repeated the success or quality of "Girlfriend." He had his best studio band working here, featuring the stellar guitar work by Television's Richard Lloyd. there are videos on YouTube, but here is a sample of one of the standout tracks, "Evangeline." (follow the link and click the album art to start the player)

THE SINATRA GROUP
The Greatest SNL Skit Ever. Bar None. "Am I right, Steve and Eydie?" Swing!.

BOB CESCA
Found him at Blondesense, checked out Bob Cesca's Goddamn Awesome Blog! Go! (yes, that actually what it's called) and discovered he writes good stuff at The Huffington Post too.

PAIN AU CHOCOLAT
Trader Joe's is a cool store. Not great for everything, but one thing they excel at is prepared frozen stuff. And nothing is better than Trader Joe's Chocolate Croissants. They are so freaking delicious it is unbelievable. And not too horrendous for you (as compared to, say, a Pillsbury Grand cinnamon roll). Go to TJs now and buy them. You have to put them out to rise the night before, but the next a.m. you throw them in the oven while you make your coffee, and in 20 minutes be ready for the finest baked product your oven has ever given you.

SHRINK WRAP
Yeah, the stuff on you food is nice, but I'm talking about windows. We are freezing our asses off in a ninety-year-old house with old double-hung windows. Supposedly adding up all the cracks and seams on just one of those windows is the equivalent of a six-inch hole in the wall. No fucking kidding. But if you put this stuff on you windows, it makes a dramatic difference. You can tell when you get ready to secure the last corner and all the leaking air is concentrated to that one spot and it feels like goddamn fan. I've been doing this for years in my old apartments in NY and it has been a godsend in our house. Do a good job, and you can't even tell it's there. I prefer the ACE brand over 3M. Cheaper, and the tape is easier to work with.

ARCHER FARMS™ APPLE STREUSEL PANCAKE MIX
Run, don't walk, to Target and buy a box of this mix and whip up the greatest pancakes you've ever tasted. I'm not kidding around. They make my customized Bisquick apple pancakes taste like a damn joke. So good they don't even need syrup. I divided the mix and we split the box over two mornings...

"FAST GLASS"
In the parlance of photography that means a lens with a wide aperture that allows for a faster exposure and also gives you a really shallow depth of field. I bought one as an early Xmas gift for our trip to Disney last month, and I have been going crazy with it. The pancake shots are taken with it. I love the look of the focus rapidly falling away and having things in the background blurry...Great for still-lifes and portraits in particular. If you have a Nikon or Canon digital SLR you can buy a 50mm f/1.8 fixed (non-zoom) lens for about a hundred bucks. Best photography-related money you'll ever spend.

WHITE TRASH
The most addictive snack concoction known to man. Our neighbors have made this and delivered a bag every year—until this year. I was really looking forward to it, but it failed to materialize for some reason*...so we took matters into our own hands. We made our own. A double batch. When we had eaten approximately nine pounds each in about an hour, we decided we better get rid of it. So, we brought a tin to Christmas dinner at Mrs F's brother's (where Mrs F and myself proceeded to devour almost all of it) so when we returned home we bagged up the rest and left on neighbors' stoops.

Mrs Furious has the recipe in the comments here.

* when Mrs F delivered our bag to the neighbors who introduced this crack to the 'hood, they confessed that they had made it, but eaten all of it before they could give it away—You cannot fucking stop. It's that good.

USING A PET-SAFE ICE MELTER
This is a no-brainer if you are a dog-owner, but even if you aren't, one of your neighbors probably is. If you put salt down on the sidewalk it can burn a dog's paws, or sicken them if they ingest it. Plus it's bad for everything—plants, grass, kids, water runoff... Ditch the old-school salt for SafePaw™, PetSafe™ or similar products.

What's Missing?

That's the current state of the Furious Mantle. You know what's missing? I mean besides photos of the second child? That's right—Weblog Awards.

Mrs F continues to hang tough in the middle of the "Best New Blog" pack, and I've called in just about every favor I can to drum up votes (ie: shamelessly shilled for votes in comment threads). Wherever she finishes, it's pretty damn cool that she made the cut as a Top 10 New Blog, period.

That said, we still want a top half finish, so go vote!

Here are my picks for some other categories:

BEST BLOG Malkin led this one for a while, but now everyone is getting their ass kicked by PostSecret which is a site I'd never heard of before. Apparently it's the "biggest ad-free site" on the web. People write down a secret on a postcard and mail it in. The site is updated weekly. Sorry. That's crap. Probably should have been in "Arts & Letters" or something. I've been voting for Andrew Sullivan, and Huffington Post has pulled ahead of Malkin for the silver.

BEST INDIVIDUAL BLOG None of these are blogs I frequent, hell I've only even heard of a few of them. Throwing Lindsay Beyerstein a bone here.

FUNNIEST BLOG: Not familiar with any of these, and not blown away with what I've seen.

BEST COMIC STRIP: Voted for xkcd. It's the stick figures strip you've probably seen. I don't know if it's the ""best" or not, but I've actually heard of it, and it's a block against "Day By Day".

BEST ONLINE COMMUNITY: Little Green Assholes is dominating this one. Go vote for Kos.

BEST LIBERAL BLOG Hullabaloo. Digby is one of the best writers online. Period.

BEST CONSERVATIVE BLOG Also known as "Tastiest Dogshit." I'm actually boycotting this category since Balloon juice was inexplicably yanked from it—which would have been a tremendous upset. The excreable Malkin is currently leading.

BEST POLITICAL COVERAGE Talking Points Memo and Carpetbagger Report should be battling this one out. Neither are finalists, and I don't know any of these. Pass.

BEST CELEBRITY BLOG Wil Wheaton is running away with this one, even though he is clearly the farthest removed from fame... He deserves it.

The rest are like voting for school boards and judges...Hit Kissing Suzy Kolber for Sports, and scroll waaaay down-ballot for Balloon Juice for Top 250, and The Carpetbagger Report for 251-500.

Kick in.

MoveOn.org is going to run the Bethany ad (below). You can contribute here.

The vote to override the veto is tomorrow (Thurs 10/18).

Unfortunately they are going to have to cut the ad down fo fit a 30-second slot, but it should still be good.

PINK PANTHER
The old-school Pink Panther cartoons are great stuff. Stumbled across these a month or two ago on Boomerang™. Saturday mornings at 11 are a date for me and The Kid. A pleasant childhood flashback for me, sure, but in may ways they're even better than I remember—great Mancini soundtrack, classic sound effects, inspiring graphic design and typography and, best of all, the slapstick violence absent from the neutered 'toons of today. The pure, unbridaled laughter that rolls out of Kid Furious during these cartoons is just so fulfilling. Throw in an "Ant and Aardvark" or "The Inspector" to keep things interesting and you're talking pure entertainment. Plenty of these on YouTube—but stick to the ones from '60s...

HOSTESS 100-CALORIE PACKS
It's a documented fact that the greatest snack food on Earth is the classic Hostess cupcake, but those bastards are like 500 calories or so. But now there are these 100 calorie packs that contain three mini cupcakes (they're about the size of those Mini Muffins if you've ever had those) that are pretty damn good, and plenty satisfying. I'm a fan of all these new 'portion control" products. That's my problem—I am completely unaware of how much I eat in the moment, and could easily pound down six cookies (or whatever) and the accompanying 600 calories without even knowing it. These products give me a finite quantity and a stopping point.

EVERY MAN JACK FACE LOTION
Early results on this are good. I've only used it one time, but I love it—the best post-shave product I've ever used. I'm loving the packaging/design as well. Get it at Target.

LAUNDRY-PURE
It fucking works. Mrs. F lobbied for one of these after reading about it around Earth Day, and I was pretty damn skeptical. Well, we got one, and it's a success. For everyday laundry, we simply don't use detergent anymore, and clothes come out totally clean and fresh. For tougher laundry we stain-treat or use a small amount of detergent, but this thing rocks. No, we will never save enough on detergent to make the thing cost-effective, but if you can afford it, it's a good move environmentally and supposedly really good for your clothes as well. No detergent means no abrasives, which (additional bonus) also means almost NO lint in the dryer.

BABY TEE
T-ShirtHell.com's Baby Dept. Some of these are great! I hope Charlotte is ready to start making a statement. I'd love to get one of those (at right) for Ruby in "boybeater"-style, but while she totally kicks ass, she doesn't take naps, and they don't have 'em big enough.

WiFi CELL PHONE
I'm still in my trial period, but the early results are good. Here at work, my office is in a cement bunker where cell reception is almost impossible. But, the school has WiFi everywhere...Combine the two, and viola! My new Nokia phone switches automatically to a voice-over-internet phone when I walk inside and lose the cell signal. Reception at my desk is crystal clear, and the phone makes and recieves calls via the internet, and T-Mobile charges nothing for the service. Works at home in my basement office as well. So far so good.

NEW OLD JERSEY
This site is just getting off the ground, but has potential. People send in pics of random sports jerseys on the street...some of which never should have been marketed. I've seen some good ones I wish I had documented. Straight Cash Homey Dot Net.

Of course, I thought the same thing when I saved this link and it went nowhere...

"NOT REALLY A CANDY BAR. RIGHT?"
I've tried several, and the only energy bar that doesn't make me want to retch is a Balance Gold chocolate peanut butter bar. Chow that baby down, and I'm ready for the return trip home on the bike.

"GET 'IM, SPARKY!"
Every dog on Earth deserves a free shot at Ron Mexico, but failing that, they can get even with this.

YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY
At least my local library... Ann Arbor has a state of the art website that allows you to search for everything, reserve items, and then renew them when you continually fail to get around to watching something. I use them as a free Netflix. I have a list of DVDs reserved, they email me when to come get them (picking up "300" tonite). Also handy for music. I have ripped dozens (a hundred? more?) of the library's CDs into my iTunes.

THINGS I DO NOT ENDORSE:
94% humidity. Having a hickory tree over your driveway. All other nasty-ass energy bars. Squirrels.

Stuff I read, and you should too...

Not-So-Hidden Agenda Over at Ezra's, Neil sees through the haze of the Pro-Life Movement. I didn't find it all that hazy, but he writes a nice piece on it.

No Recess Today Harry Reid's got something in mind to keep Bush from pulling any more bullshit recess appointments...never closing the Senate. Me likey.

Membership Rewards Radley Balko joins Andrew Sullivan in the Ron Paul Fan Club. Apparently Bill Maher is pledging, but Chris Dodd? Not so much. Now, I don't find this exchange as frustrating or infuriating as Balko, but Maher really put it on a tee for him, and Dodd's cut was pretty fucking tepid. Swing for the fences, Senator, you have nothing to lose.

Borderline Insanity Hilzoy thinks about immigration so I don't have to.

Boycott City

For Circuit City staff, good pay is a bad thing
The retailer cuts 3,400 who its says earn well above the going rate. They can apply for their old jobs -- for less pay.

LA Times | March 29, 2007

Circuit City Stores Inc. has a message for some of its best-paid employees: Work for less or work somewhere else.

The electronics retailer on Wednesday laid off 3,400 people who earned "well above" the local market rate for the sort of jobs they held at its stores.

In 11 weeks they'll be able to apply for their old positions — which will come with lower hourly wages.

[...] "It had nothing to do with their skills or whether they were a good worker or not,"[MF: that should make them feel better and work harder] Cimino said. "It was a function of their salary relative to the market."

Circuit City expects to reap $110 million in savings in the next year [...] Not everyone on Wall Street is sure the layoffs will pay off [...] The highest-paid employees can be some of the best and most experienced, and if Circuit City's customer service suffers, so may the company's fortunes against Best Buy Inc., whose reputation for high-quality help has helped make it the industry leader.

"Staff meeting for all our top sales people in the back: You're all fired. Comeback in three months and fight each other for your old jobs at way less money." Should really pay dividends...

I'm sure the brilliant executives who losing the market to Best Buy are not forced to "reapply for their old jobs at significant reductions." Way to try and make up the marketshare on the backs of the company's workers... Those $8-$13/hour wages are crazy!

I will confess that I don't spend much time or money in ANY of these stores, but when I have, I've found myself in Best Buy over Circuit City almost every time. Here's hoping Best Buy continues to eat their lunch, and I'll be sure to do my part.

[h/t Kevin Drum]

UPDATE: Thought I'd mention the others on the "boycott" list:
Wal-Mart (big surprise, right?)
ExxonMobil (Big Oil is all relative, but they are the worst. I try to go to Citgo and BP whenever possible—no Mid-East imports)
Domino's Pizza

List of companies to support.
