Committed to Uncommitted

Today is Primary Day in Michigan. Some last minute scrambling yesterday on a local Obama email list netted me an official "Obama'08" yard sign, and I stayed up late making my own custom sign to remind voters what to do at their polling place...

I'm pleased with the results. My house is on a busy street a block from the high school, so it's pretty prime placement.

I'm off to vote at lunch, I'll report back later... If "Uncommitted" beats Hillary, I will do a fucking jig.

UPDATE: Voted at lunch. Fastest polling time ever. No line at all, had to fill out the request for the party ballot and then one circle to color in on the ballot, that's it. They said turnout has been good for a primary day, but they expect a much busier evening. The snow messed things up in the morning.

I'm glad I did my sign. Hopefully it informs some people as they approach the school, since there were no signs or explanations anywhere to be seen about the "Uncommitted" issue, and the ballot wording is confusing on the "write-in" section. I have no doubt that many, many Obama and Edwards votes will be wasted in that spot, which is too bad, as Hillary is the benificiary of that.

Interesting note: this area beyond the restricted boundary is usually a two-foot tall forest of cardboard and wire, today there was but one sad and lonely sign...

Nice post. And nice sign! Is Mrs. F as politically minded as you are?

Thanks. I wish I had thought of it at work yesterday, I could have done it in color...

I used the legs from my "IMPEACH BUSH" sign to make it. I had to fight Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to get them back.

Get it? No? Legs?...never mind...

By the way, that last picture perfectly captures the malaise that is winter in Michigan. A perpetual grayness that completely obscures the time of day—Morning? Noon? 3:00? It's all the same when you never see the sun. This is punctured periodically by a negligible snowfall that is pretty for a moment and then just dissolves into the ever-present salt and mud. It sucks the life out of you. And it's like that for weeks...and weeks...

Sorry, Mish. Forgot to address your question. Mrs F does her civic duty, and was the one who encouraged me to got more active politically, but she's got too much going on to make room in her head for this stuff the way I do.

Chris and I plan to early vote. If we early vote, we can vote in any precinct in our County. If we vote on the actual day (1/29) we can only vote in our own precinct and that's near our house, 30 miles from work. It's difficult to make it back home in time to vote.

We got our sample ballots in the mail Saturday. There's a full list of Democrats on it (we have a closed primary) and a proposed law to vote on. BTW - if you read this and you're from Florida, vote NO on raising the Homestead Exemption!!!

I took my kid to the polls with me today. We (I) voted as we should...or at least as you and I argued people should all damn weekend.

I gotta say, I am always disturbed when poll workers ask for my drivers' license. I thought they weren't supposed to, but at 7:45 in the morning with a toddler in-tow who wants to talk, at the top of his lungs, about whatever the Hell is on his mind*, I just don't have the energy to make an issue of it.

That's a really nice sign. Very professional looking. If "Uncommitted" wins your primary, they should definitely hire you for their communications department.

What does "Uncommitted" mean?

Everyone, I can testify the sign looks better in person! Great sign, Mr. F.

I voted too, but at 5:30--i had to wait a bit. Quite busy.

Let's pray the Romney result doesn't bit us in the arse.

btw, the angie who signed the "what is uncommitted" is not me...just want to make sure you know i know what's happening here ;-)

AllAdither Angie-

You're not ignorant, half the people in Michigan probably didn't understand it, and the campaigns hardly addressed it.

Long story short: Some geniuses in Lansing thought they'd make Michigan "more important" by moving our primary up into January to be one of the early states like Iowa or N.H. The national parties said, "No f'in way." They did it anyway. So the parties punished the state by yanking their delegates and on the Dem side asking candidates not to campaign here. Some (Edwards, Obama and others) even removed their names from the ballot*. Hillary did NOT. Sh agreed not to campaign here, but she was the only maor candidate on the Democratic ballot. You are not allowed to write-in for Obama or Edwards, so if you wanted to show support for them or protest against this fiasco or Hillary, you were urged to vote "uncommitted."

"Uncommitted" does not refer to the voter (I'm fucking committed) it refers to the delegates those votes will represent—they are not "committed" to a specific candidate. If they are allowed to participate in the Convention this summer those delgates are not pledged to Hillary and can support a different candidate.

They better straighten this shit out for next time. This strategy essentially made this state a one-party primary, and gave Hillary a "victory" where she was the only erson running.

A damn joke.

*It would seem to me this was a tactical mistake for sure, since they didn't ALL remove themselves, but I also regard it as a disappointing pander to Iowa and N.H., and knuckling under to the party. They disenfranchised us.

I always thought Obama supporters should be committed. At least some of them ; )

I'll add to the list of reasons I should be...
