Mr Furious Heartily Recommends...

The Screaming Trees' Dust.

A few weeks ago John Cole posed the question, "Whatever happened to the Screaming Trees?" Musical discussion and debate ensued and I agreed with Cole that this is their strongest effort and recommended lead singer Mark Lanegan's solo Whiskey for the Holy Ghost. Check it out.

Dude, you won't be disappointed. If you can give me an online method to send you MP3s of their other stuff, I'd be happy to. Or burn you some discs...

That's a standing offer on all music.

iTunes has moved onto Sweet Oblivion, their best-known album, which features semi-hit "Nearly Lost You." Not too fucking shabby either.

The obvious appeal is Lanegan's whiskey-drenched rasp, but the secret ingredient is Barret Martin's driving drumbeat. The Conner brother's guitar and bass is almost atmospheric, it's the vocals and drums that carry the weight.

Winning combo for me every time.

Fuck it. This album is so good, I'm declaring a draw.

Wow! Screaming Trees are great! (were?)

They were lost in the Seattle Grunge shuffle. I've often thought it because they were an hall of fame caliber ugly band.

But they were great. Lanegan popped up on a Queens of the Stone Age album, too.

I've been undergoing my own grunge flashback lately. I can't get AIC's Facelift out of my rotation lately.

I would consider it a personal favor if you burned me some disks. I will return the favor with some Michigan beers; my choice or some of your long-lost faves.

Not sure that's an equal exchange in terms of shipping...consider it my treat.

I'll go through my iTunes at home this weekend and shoot you list of my grunge collection. There might be more you want.

Next up alphabetically after Screaming Trees in my iTunes today was Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger.

I love Badmotorfinger. Soundgarden was one of the best IMO.

I don't care about the shipping "disparity." I figure there might be some "remind you of home" Michigan beers you might want!

I LOVED Uncle Anesthesia. Just a fucking great album.

So what's the deal here? They've released a new album after all these years?

If by "new" you mean 1996... "Dust" was their last album.

Man, I'm out of it.
