It's official. The Furious Family is packing up and leaving Michigan. "Hot" Carl Levin and the rest of the fucking morons who screwed up my primary have pushed me over the edge, and a man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do...
Many of you (Deb) already know all about this from Mrs F's blog, but I figured I'd bust it out here, since it's certain to impact the posts here—my long nightmare of a job search came to a close last week with an offer for a gig in Asheville, NC. After some negotiation, I accepted the job on Friday. Now, the nightmare of getting the house ready to sell takes over.
It's a terrific opportunity for me professionally, and Asheville seems to be, by all accounts and my cursory inspection, a fantastic place to live, so I am excited—Mrs F is alternately excited and terrified, and Kid is pissed...So this should be fun.
The logistics of the relocation are kind of overwhelming. The house here in Ann Arbor is nowhere near ready to put on the market, and we don't know exactly how, when or where we are going to settle in Asheville...
So that's the big news. I'm beat, and my wrists are killing me from scraping the house all day to get it ready to paint, so I am hitting the sack.
Oh, for what it's worth, this is the leading contender for the new Casa de Furious...

Congratulations! Good luck with the move. It's a shitload of work, but I'm sure it will all be worth it.
Are you going to write Levin a note telling him that he contributed to your decision?
Wow, that's great. Asheville is awesome. I was just there a couple of months ago looking for a potential retirement location (not Asheville actually, but Hendersonville about 30 miles south). Asheville itself has a groovy vibe, though I'm looking for a bit of a smaller town to retire to. I figure I'm on the 5-year plan to retirement at this point. The surrounding national parks and national forests are beautiful, and there are plenty of outdoorsy things to do.
I can't figure out what's up with the Michigan "compromise". It just doesn't make sense to me that they took away four Clinton delegates. Though I support Obama now (since Kucinich has left the race), I thought she should have gotten the 73 rather than the 69. Let's face it, it's not like those four would have changed the result. I just found it really curious.
PS -- Cute house! I love how much house you can get for a relatively small amount of money in North Carolina. Though I say that as someone who lives in a location where a half a million gets you a shack in which you are lucky to have indoor plumbing.
Huge congrats Mr. F. I have always had a good time in Asheville, and as RSB says, it indeed has a gorrvy vibe. I said on Mrs. F's blog that I think Asheville is what Ann Arbor wishes she was.
Something about Michigan. ATK contributor Joel is looking to move to Houston because "there's nothing for him here."
If I wasn't so entrenched in state-level politics, Boston kinda calls my name.
Anyway, congrats again, and good luck.
Congrats. I don't envy you guys all the work ahead. But I hear Asheville is beautiful, and it'll be worth it in the end.
You guys do seem to like the older houses.

That's funny, because when I looked at the picture I was thinking $299 sounds a little pricey. I guess it all depends on what your local market is like.
Hot damn. 5 bedrooms? On a half acre? We've only got four on a typical city lot, and I can't even utter the number we paid without getting hives.
Congratulations on both the gig and the adventure ahead. Tell Mrs. F that meetup.com is a lifesaver if she's looking to meet some other moms and get Kid incorporated quickly into the new city.
I'll be thinking of you guys Tuesday night when I'm hovering around Excel Energy center, hoping for a good seat.
Congratulations. Moving sucks though. I'm now happily settling into the being done moving phase, which is much better.
Deb,
That's because it is somewhat of a shithole... it is cheaper than the other 3 bedrooms on city lots we're looking at.
That was Mrs F on my computer...
It's not really a 5 BR either. It has 3 BR upstairs—one of which is small and pretty much just that dormer over the front porch...It has 1 true BR downstairs plus an extra room that's more of a den.
That house has two big advantages for us—big yard, and perhaps more importantly space to expand without having to build or add-on.
But it needs lots of work: a new roof, a new furnace/AC several...the kitchen is atrocious, and just general repairs throughout. But the bones are there and the style is right. And it hasn't been altered too much from original...
The porch looks great, so your hand pain was worth it.
Since I have only talked to Mrs F, I will say congratulations to you for scoring a great job. I just wish with all of my heart that it could have been in Ann Arbor. It's going to break our heart to have you leave. And what will Nate do without being able to wave good morning and good night to Canine Furious (I know what you are thinking, and no way in hell).
Congrats Mr. F. - Seemss like the sleepover was a success! I'm so happy for you that you got this job. I don't envy you the moving work, but I envy the fresh start. Will I know any of the titles you'll be ADing? And don't worry about Kid. They all get pissed at you for something somewhere down the line... It's a right of parental passage! She'll get through it. And so will you and Mrs. F.
Congratulations on the new job. And the house looks lovely -- I'm in the "Wow, I need to move to a different part of the country" camp that's astounded by the low price.
